As we age, our teeth naturally become discolored as a result of staining and even the thinning of the tooth enamel. Because of this natural process, tooth color is one of the characteristics most strongly associated with age. A person with discolored teeth is automatically judged to be significantly older than a person with whiter teeth. If you want to have a young, healthy-looking smile, tooth whitening is an essential procedure.
At The Art of Smilemaking, we utilize the advanced Zoom! Tooth Whitening procedure that can make your teeth as many as nine shades whiter in a single office visit. During the procedure, your gums are painted with a protective solution before the powerful whitener is applied to your teeth. Then an intense monochromatic light is shone on your teeth to activate the whitening chemicals. This procedure is repeated several times, taking a total of about 60-90 minutes.

Long-Lasting Results
Afterwards, your teeth are permanently whitened. The exact degree of whitening depends on the level of your staining and the color and thickness of your enamel. Of course, tooth whitening does not prevent your teeth from getting stained again. To extend the lifetime of your tooth whitening procedure, practice good dental hygiene and minimize consumption of staining foods and beverages such as:
If you take care of your teeth, the effects of your tooth whitening can last for many years. You will also be given custom-made take-home whitening trays to improve and extend your whitening results.
Other Treatments
For some people, however, teeth whitening may not give adequate results. If you have thin enamel, chipped, uneven, or crooked teeth, you may wish to seek a different whitening solution that can simultaneously correct these other problems as well. Porcelain veneers are a better whitening solution for some people because they are able to simultaneously correct other defects in your smile's appearance.
If you are considering combining tooth whitening with other cosmetic procedures as part of a smile makeover, you should have your whitening done first so your restorations can be made to match your brighter teeth.
The only way to determine the ideal combination of cosmetic dentistry procedures that can give you the best smile for you is to consult with a cosmetic dentist whose trained eye can assess your appearance and make recommendations.
